The White Marsh Chapter of Wildlife Action was chartered in 1991 as an
affiliate of Wildlife Action of North Carolina, which was established in 1987.
Both are affiliates under the Wildlife Action national organization which was
chartered in 1977 in Mullins, SC. Thus, in addition to our sixteen years of
local organization, we have had the benefit of drawing on the thirty years of
accumulated knowledge, talent and experience from our national parent
organization.
Since 1995, the White Marsh Chapter has been based at Steve's Retreat off Old
Glade Road two miles north of Hallsboro, NC on SR 1001, an 18 acre educational and
recreational facility on the Walter Batten family farm. The facility has a
four-acre fish pond and several acres of woodland. Through the years our club
members, with the help of NUMEROUS friends, both individual and business,
throughout our community, have worked to turn Steve's into one of Wildlife
Action's best Resource Education Centers, building a two-story clubhouse and
educational building, nature trails through the woods, and developing the fish
pond.
Our first children's Summer Camp was held in 1997, and this year we celebrated
our 10th annual camp with one of our best ever. Fifty-one children attended
from June 14-16 (fourteen on scholarship), and were aided and guided by twelve
teenage Junior Counselors and over two-dozen adult volunteers.
This year’s camp theme was “Birds of the World”, and the kids really
learned a lot about “All Things That Fly”! In addition, this year’s camp
was dedicated to the memory of Lenox Proctor, whose dedication and love of our
kids has meant so much to the success of our camps in years past. We’re
certain he would have enjoyed this one!
